More myths on nuclear power

1. It's a nuclear bomb waiting to happen.

People don't realize that in order to make a nuclear bomb, you will need to specifically made it to be a bomb. Nuclear power plant is designed specifically not to be a bomb. People always say what if the nuclear reactor blows up it will become a bomb. Well, even a normal gas power plant  will blow up and becomes a bomb if you want it to. But ironically, no one is scared of a gas power plant blowing up. Nuclear power plant are designed to be safer than any other type of power plant. Even with the worst case scenario for a nuclear power plant it would still not blow up but it will melt down.

2. There's not enough uranium for the next 50-100 years.

With more advance reactor being created and used, the fuel efficiency will increase. It means, it will need less fuel to generate the same electricity. With new modern reactors having up to 99.5% efficiency, surely there will be enough uranium to last thousand of years. If you still not convinced, how about using thorium as nuclear fuel. As thorium is as 4 times more abundant than uranium, there is no problem in finding fuel for the reactor. Mind you, we are not going to use nuclear forever and ever. It's for us to buy enough time to develop new energy technology that are sustainable.

  1. this info does not encourage malaysia to build NPP..
but then in my opinion, NPP will give more benefits then other power sources..
and at the same time this 2 problem can be overcome to make it last longer and by giving peoples knowledge on nuclear power plant..
im quite sure they will like it..

  2. I agree with this . Even our car could explode if something went wrong , and why are we still driving it? haha .and i see the relation between fuel efficiency and fuel quantity. in the future, hope the next generation of nuclear reactor will take up minimum input to produce maximum output.

  3. Ya that's true, if technology is used wisely to create advance reactor,im sure the fuel efficiency can be increased. This will give more benefit to the community and environment.

  4. nice explaination. this post make me think and realize that our Malaysian should be exposed more about nuclear power plant. if the scientist already and still make their research about the nuclear power plant and already consider that the nuclear plant can be green to the environment,so why not we use the source of uranium into the nuclear power plant to generate energy. for a decades ago,im sure we not having such as technology nowadays. so in the future, there will be new energy source and technology that human will create to replace those unrenewable source energy.

  5. a best eplanation for Nuclear related issues. However,no matter what it takes for safety issues,it is still not safe. The nuclear disaster can be happend in US and Japan. Why not in Malaysia?Think about it.Why we can't make the coal power plant thatt operating now become 100% efficient??no matter what kind of power palnt we build, the top issues will be SAFETY and EFFICIENCY..:)

  6. Dear Fazli, Zhi Ming,PAVANESVARAA, Adam and Kamariah,

Thanx for your responses! Yeah, it seems the mentality of our people and the world will always against nuclear energy. We cannot blame them because it is what they believe but we, as an engineer for the future will try to search a solution in open their minds and eyes about the effectiveness of nuclear energy, right? So, we will start to work by now in try to achieve what we want to get for the future - nuclear energy. People is always afraid because of the radioactive. So, we said about the fact that we expose to radiation everyday, even the food we eat. So, compare with percentage of the possibility in getting radiation by nuclear and the daily activity that we do, right? I think we still be able to open their minds and eyes about it. Don't worry my friend, we, we mean all of us, start to work now and try to open their minds bit by bit. Still have time. Go Nuclear! =)

  7. npp is not a nuclear bomb but if it has radioactive leaks it will have the same after effect of a nuclear bomb.even though it takes a long time to use up uranium but wat if everyone decides to go nuclear will there be enough for everyone?
